Wildfires have caused extraordinary devastation on the island of Maui, ranking among the deadliest of US wildfires in more than a century. The fires destroyed the historic town of Lahaina — resulting in record fatalities and leaving thousands of residents without homes. The emergency relief efforts will continue in the days ahead, with significant rebuilding and recovery needed over the long-term.
UBS Optimus Foundation partner, Americares, is preparing to provide medicines, supplies, and support the re-establishment of local health services to ensure that everyone has access to the health care, medicines, and emergency aid they need.
While movement is restricted in the heavily impacted zones on Maui, allowing only state officials and one family member of registered inhabitants, Americares’ dedicated team is engaged with the Hawaii VOAD (Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster). They visited key coordination centers like the National Guard Joint Taskforce Coordination Center and the State Emergency Operations Center. Additionally, Americares is working with Red Cross Shelter officials in Honolulu to establish where this aid could be most impactful.
The response plan will continue to take shape based on immediate need on the ground.
