Zürich Children's Hospital - Pediatric Palliative Care

Project overview:

Project overview:
Although Switzerland has one of the best health systems in the world, there is still room for improvement in palliative care. In the canton of Zurich, about 900 children suffer from a lifelimiting illness –up to 500 children die from cancer and other diseases. But only a small percentage are currently receiving palliative care from trained personnel in accordance with international quality standards. The focus of this program is to ease the suffering of these children and their families and to improve the access to a quality Pediatric Palliative Care service developed by the University Children's Hospital Zurich. These children and their families have special needs which are not met by the current care in children's hospitals. We know that palliative care can extend the lives of terminally ill children and help families cope better. Palliative care treats the whole person and family, addressing not only physical needs, but also psychological, sociocultural and spiritual aspects.
